HapevilleAbout This Project: Come join SMPS, Trees Atlanta and the City of Hapeville for their 3rd annual Main Street Planting. Volunteers will help plant 50 trees along the Sylvan Road/ Gateways area of the City. The benefits will include added shade, cleaner air, and recreation space. The project is Saturday, March 8th from 9 AM until noon. We begin the day with coffee and a demonstration and end with clean up and photos. This is a great community event -- everyone loves to get a little dirty!

The preservation of urban green space and the restoration of natural wildlife habitats contributes to the overall quality of life for the community. The removal of invasive plants which destroy trees and choke out native plants is essential. The natural green space is restored by then planting trees, shrubs and other plants native to the area. Plan to join us in giving back to the community and environment. This will be a very physical project, so come prepared to get a good workout. Work gloves are not provided, but are required, so please bring a pair with you. Bottled water will be provided at the site.

About Trees Atlanta: Trees Atlanta is a non-profit citizens’ group dedicated to protecting and improving Atlanta’s urban environment by planting and conserving trees. Trees Atlanta was founded by Central Atlanta Progress, the Atlanta Commissioner of Parks, and the Junior League to address downtown’s lack of green space. For more information on how to make a donation or volunteer your professional skills, please visit the Trees Atlanta website at www.treesatlanta.org.

Planting During Drought: Trees Atlanta has assured us that they will water all newly planted trees for 2 years, with grey water (reused water).  The organization is committed to the concept that trees are essential in urban areas for clean and healthy water--one single tree can recycle $750 worth of water per year!  Trees Atlanta is working to get the most out of every drop. The organization’s rooftop collects rain and will provide 500 gallons of storage for planting projects. In addition, greywater collected from City of Atlanta hydrant flushings (that Trees Atlanta will collect and use to water our trees), and the implementation our own community’s water collecting system will serve as recycled water sources.
